Cue the salsa steps ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪
You’re learning how to dance salsa.
You’ve got to get these steps right.
You practice and practice these intricate steps. And you know them by heart.
You have the best salsa dance shoes and the best instructor in town.
But you just CAN’T catch up.
What the heck? You can’t dance properly.
As soon as the music is turned on, the dissonance starts. Your steps NEVER match to the rhythm of the music.
The steps themselves are perfect, but they do not sync to the music.
An INEXPLICABLE sense of inadequacy sinks in little by little and then takes over your whole body and soul.
How can this be?
“I am freaking wasting my time. What the hell am I doing? I spent hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars on this.”
You lose the spark and the momentum and your entire ‘learn how to dance’ salsa falls into the abyss.
You desperately dance salsa.
You are dancing to the salsa steps of evidence-based (or not), mainstream health advice steps that health gurus tell you to.
God forbid, if you don’t, well, you’re gonna die early.
These are the steps you grabbed out there and are forcing upon your body in an attempt to improve your health, have more energy, and resolve health issues.
You’ve danced the seemingly best salsa steps out there:
You sought out health gurus including functional and integrative practitioners promising perfect, evidence-based protocols.
You’ve done all the cutting-edge tests.
You consumed countless health books and podcasts.
You attempted to apply various "evidence-based" techniques.
Despite these efforts you still struggle - it’s an uphill battle.
Dang it, at this rate, I’d rather live a shorter life.
(“is this longevity/healthspan mad dash actually making me sicker?”)
“Maybe I should go back to drinking my Whiskey every night.”
You are struggling with your health because you keep insisting that dancing salsa steps is going to work.
Feels like the rhythm of hell. The rhythm that works for some health person out there but would never work for you.
The rhythm of hell
5:00 AM: *BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP*
↓
Drag heavy limbs from bed even though only slept for 4 hours pumping cortisol hormone all night
(That book said 5 AM wake up will change my life and Peter Attia said I have to workout everyday no matter what)
↓
Chug coffee, ignore queasy stomach, ignore body slowly deteriorating.
↓
Force running shoes on swollen feet (running is the ultimate workout says who?)
→ GRIND! → HARDER!
↓
One-two-three, one-two-three (stumbling through miles)
→ FORCE!
↓
Drinks 8 glasses of water during the day as the nutritionist said (without electrolytes nor minerals, therefore, not hydrating at all - in fact, creating more fatigue on top of it all)
Crash by 2 PM
↓
Exhausted - body compensating for the jogging and trying to recover with the little raw materials it has.
↓
Back pain. Pulled muscles. Sore.
Your body is begging for waltz.
It has been begging you for waltz for years, but you refuse to listen because you think that the health guru out there knows more than you about your own body.
Vitality crumbles in the chaos
Vitality is crumbling right before your eyes into the chaos of what it seems like aging?
You can’t recover enough and in enough time.
It’s hopeless though - you know you have tried everything.
The dissonance
Your Body: Your Actions:
♪ Slow... → FAST!
♪ Rest... → PUSH!
♪ Restore... → GRIND!
♪ Gentle... → HARDER!
♪ Build... → FORCE!
Your body whispers:
"Slow... gentle... restore..."
But you command:
"FASTER! HARDER! MORE!"
Attempting to apply generic health advice without considering personal rhythms is like dancing salsa to a waltz – it's out of sync and ineffective.
There is a mismatch between ‘evidence-based’ sexy health protocols and natural rhythms
For the record, evidence-based data (and anecdotal data) are indeed very useful.
But there is an ART to this.
You HAVE to know when to use it in your daily health routine.
You have to take into consideration where you are in your health right now and if your body has the capacity (is ready) to take in and absorb it fully, effectively and sustainably.
The solution:
1. Embrace your unique health rhythm
2. Create YOUR OWN protocol
3. Step into your health groove and fine tune it.
Next post in this series will be about how to embrace your unique health rhythm and how to create your own health framework - protocols - for making wellness truly enjoyable and lasting
